HARMONIZING CHANGE Is a Path to Wellness

Now is a perfect time to slow down, re-evaluate, realize change is inevitable, and understand there is always room for better self-care. Always. It’s our natural way of expansion and growth—individually and collectively.

Times of challenge or change—like starting or ending a relationship, changing jobs, facing an illness, navigating menopause, or losing a loved one—often cause stress and affect our physical, emotional, or mental health. The stress response can show up in many ways, such as subtle fear and anxiety, sleeplessness, resistance, anger, self-blame, and feeling overwhelmed, out-of-sync, or fractured.

How do we address the discord, bring ourselves back into alignment, and restore balance? How do we harmonize change and thrive—not merely survive—as we face it?

  • First, we need the emotional honesty and the tools to recognize the imbalance.

  • Next, we need to lean into effective self-care practices tailored to our unique constitution.

This year’s Women in the Round shares the tools and practices to help you do both.

Harmonizing change is a path to wellness. It’s how we grow our hearts.

A POWERFUL WOMEN’S COLLECTIVE

A COMMUNITY OF WOMEN
Our intent is to create a community of women to come together in an intimate circle to reconnect with our true essence, embrace who we are becoming, and rediscover our innate power and wisdom. We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female,” and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who are significantly female-identified. Attendees only need to identify as women in a way that’s significant to them.

COME AS YOU ARE; NO YOGA OR AYURVEDA EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
This retreat is for any woman who is curious and brave and willing to jump in and explore! No yoga or ayurveda experience is necessary. Whether you’re a beginner or long-time practitioner, our practices and discussions—from ayurvedic teachings to therapeutic, restorative, vinyasa flow, and contemplative practices—are accessible for everyone. Do as much or as little as you’d like.

MAKE IT YOUR RETREAT (THERE’S LOTS TO CHOOSE FROM)
There are plenty of optional activities, massage and spa services, ecotours, and more available to enjoy. You can create precisely the retreat you want. If that means pool time, great food, and soaking up the sun in the company of other lovely women, it can be just that. If you want it to be that plus yoga, movement, ayurveda, and more, it can be that, too. You choose!

HARMONIZING CHANGE:
The Power of Yoga and Ayurveda to Guide, Strengthen, and Heal

This year’s Women in the Round acknowledges that there is valuable wisdom to share woman-to-woman and across generations. Taking care of ourselves is a priority, and gaining much needed knowledge and tools through holistic teachings is worth our time and investment.

On this retreat, you will:

  • Practice daily self-care (and set the intention to bring these practices home)

  • Realize the importance of gleaning and learning through others and across generations

  • Explore foundational principles of ayurveda that can enhance your wellbeing:

    • Practice daily Ayuryoga and learn about your marma points

    • Acknowledge and understand subtle signs of health imbalances

    • Learn practices to elevate and refine your energy and help restore balance

  • Delve deeper into the therapeutic aspects of asana practice and pranayam

  • Gain a clearer understanding of your nervous system, including how to:

    • Wake up your interoceptive awareness (the belly-brain connection)

    • More steadily regulate your nervous system to counter stress

  • Gain confidence in what works best for you to restore and maintain optimum wellness

  • Honor yourself right where you are

  • Make new connections with other amazing women

WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda, which means wisdom of life in Sanskrit, is one of the oldest healing sciences and an art of living in harmony with nature and oneself. Ayurveda teaches about uniqueness and authenticity and finding out who you are in the world as a being and how to adequately nourish yourself through food, lifestyle, rituals, good company, rest, and other choices.

Ayurveda teaches that each of us has a unique balance of the five elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth), which make up our constitution and are reflected in the tridoshas (subtle life energies) of vata, pitta, and kapha.

Many factors can disrupt our natural balance of the elements, resulting in disorder. Health is order and disease (or dis-ease) is disorder. Simple ayurvedic practices can help restore order, or balance. As we move through the cycles of life and change of seasons, practices like these daily allow us to thrive and live life more fully.

Since the beginning, yoga and ayurveda—two complementary paths to wellness—have been practiced together. They are called the sister sciences because of their overlap in bringing deep and lasting change in body and mind. When we follow the practices offered by each, we can better understand our bodies, harmonize change in our lives, and create radical transformation.

YOGA as an EMPOWERING FORCE

Each day we will move through practices that channel our own creative energy as women and human beings. These practices serve as a grounding force, fine-tune our nervous system, nourish our spirit, and help unleash and empower our creative force.

Throughout the week there will be opportunities for:

  • Sunrise beach contemplation

  • Wisdom Flow — Free-spirited vinyasa flow

  • Therapeutic Ayuryoga — Ayurvedic education and practice

  • Restorative, yin yoga, and somatic practices

  • Satsang/discussion, guided imagery, and reflection

  • Journaling, time in nature, and walking on a gorgeous beach

SETTING: TRONCONES BEACH and LAS VILLAS

THE VILLAS: Las Villas on Troncones Beach is a gorgeous oceanfront retreat 30 minutes north of Zihuatanejo on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Each villa has multiple single- or double-occupancy bedrooms with private or shared baths, a shared kitchen and common space with an open floor plan ideal for enjoying the ocean breezes. Take in breathtaking sunsets to the west and the Sierra Madre mountains to the east; take a dip and relax by the saltwater infinity pool; bask in the sun; lounge under the shade of the palapa; or walk, run and explore the beach, just steps away.

MEALS: Fresh and delicious brunch and dinner are provided daily, mostly on site at the Villas, with both vegetarian and fish or meat options. Meals feature authentic Mexican cuisine prepared by Las Villas’ gourmet cooks, who will do their best to meet special dietary needs. We also plan to have two group dinners at local restaurants with outdoor seating (included in retreat fee).

ACTIVITIES: In addition to our scheduled sessions, there is lots to enjoy, such as:

  • Walking, running and exploring the 3-mile stretch of golden Troncones beach

  • Kayaking, hiking and horseback riding

  • Boogie-boarding and swimming in the warm Pacific waters

  • Cooking lesson at Restaurante La Mexicana

  • Massage and spa services

  • Surf and stand-up paddleboard lessons

  • Local sea turtle sanctuary — watch the release of baby turtles into the ocean

THE TOWN: Just a short walk down the beach from Las Villas is Troncones, a small community with a few tiendas, beachfront restaurants, small hotels, B&Bs, cafes, and surf shops (some of the best surfing in Mexico is in this area). A few of our favorite spots are:

  • Lorenzo’s “Cocos Frios” stand just across the bridge on the way into town — don’t miss your chance to sit a spell and enjoy a nice, cool drink from a freshly cut coconut!

  • The open-air market on Thursday morning at Tres Mujeres Boutique Hotel, where local artisans and food vendors offer their wares (just a few doors down from Las Villas).

  • Cafe Pacifico, creating some of the best coffee drinks and smoothies in town. They are also a full-service restaurant offering delectable breakfast, lunch and dinner items.

YOUR RETREAT, YOUR WAY:
relax, reflect and renew on your own terms

There are a variety of practices and other activities scheduled daily. A sample day's schedule is shown here (schedule and session content may vary).

Please do not feel pressure to do it all. You may participate in as much or as little as you wish. This is your retreat, so make it what it needs to be for you. Allow yourself the time and space to relax and renew in body, mind and spirit. Go at your own pace. Honor your inner nudges and let them guide you toward an appropriate level of activity, striking a healthy balance between community time and personal time.

Let your senses soak in all this place has to offer. Feel the sand between your toes, the fresh breeze upon your face. Quiet yourself and sway to the rhythm of the waves. Breathe deep the sweet sea air. Take in the transcendent beauty of an ocean sunset or the mountain's majesty. Be still and let earth, sea and sky nourish the soul!

AIRFARE/AIRLINE RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • We recommend purchasing a refundable fare for maximum flexibility. Many airlines now offer fully refundable fares for a modest additional fee.

  • United Airlines and American Airlines have the best itineraries, at least for trips originating in Pittsburgh. For travel originating in other cities, check United, American, Delta, and Alaska Airlines (good from the West Coast).

    • NOTE: American Airlines — If traveling from Pittsburgh (PIT), be aware of possibly very short connection times for connecting flights.

    • NOTE: United Airlines — From Pittsburgh (PIT), the United itinerary to ZIH is good on Saturdays, but not so good on other days.

    • NOTE: Connecting flights — Most, if not all, Delta itineraries connect through Mexico City, while United and American connect in U.S. airports and from there fly directly to Zihuatanejo (no intermediate stop in Mexico).

Alternate Airports for DepartureWe have at times found lower fares and shorter itineraries into ZIH (including some direct flights) from locations other than our home airport of Pittsburgh International (PIT). Airports to consider include Atlanta (ATL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Cleveland (CLE), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Denver (DEN), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) and San Francisco (SAN).
